Obituary of James Alarcon Martinez

James "Jim" Alarcon Martinez passed away on Thursday, August 17th, 2023, in the comfort of his home in Chandler, AZ, at the age of 95. 

James was born on August 4th, 1928 in Mesa, Arizona, to Jesus and Esther Martinez. He graduated from Mesa High in 1948. 

He served active duty in the United States Army from November 1950 and transferred to reserve status in November 1952 until he was honorably dishcarged on September 29, 1956. 

He was married to Vera Martinez on August 11, 1953 until her passing on February 23, 1975. On November 25, 1988, he married Jeanette Meyer Ott. 

James worked most of his life as a Golf Course Superintendent. He took great pride in maintaining the golf courses and his greens were the best in the state. He was very knowledgeable about trees, plants, and various grasses. You could always ask him a question about your lawn or trees and he was happy to suggest how you could solve the problem. His yard was the best kept on the block and he would often have people in the neighborhood stop by and admire his front and back yard. A couple of times a lady even brought him an apple pie for helping the neighborhood look so nice!

He was a sharp dresser (from head to toe), and enjoyed wearing western attire. When he was younger, he loved to go out target shooting and dove hunting. He was an excellent shot because he had 20/20 vision. 

James enjoyed the holidays because he would get to visit with his family. He enjoyed being around them and watching them grow. 

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, his three daughters, two son-in-laws, six grandchildren, three honorary grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be at 12 noon on August 28th, 2023, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Summit Point Ward, 2520 N. Hartford Street in Chandler. 

He will be laid to rest next to his first wife Vera at City of Mesa Cemetery, 1212. N. Center Street in Mesa.
